150 Breathtaking First Dance Song Ideas for Your Wedding (Updated for 2020!)

Music is one of the most important elements of your big day. Think about all of the times music has changed your mood, your outlook and even inspired you - now imagine what effect it can have for your Big Day!

To start with, we'll discuss some top tips for managing your music below, but you can scroll down to skip to the top 150 First Dance Songs instead...

Why Music Deserves Some Thought

Music sets the tone for your special day, and no matter what theme or atmosphere you're looking to set, there's no doubt that music is one of the most powerful elements for impact - if not the most important!

On top of this, the key tracks you play on your big day will stimulate memories for you and your guests for the rest of your lives.

I'm sure there's already hundreds of songs you know that when you personally listen to them, they take you back to back to a special time or place - that's what your music will do for your Wedding in the future too.

So you definitely want to put a some effort in to your playlist for your big day, but we definitely don't recommend getting to bogged down with it - ask friends and family for help and use our top tips below to make sure it doesn't get left to the last minute = STRESS!

Things to Consider When Planning Your Playlist

1. What Vibe Are You After?

Your music can really change the mood of a crowd, so it's a good idea to think about what kind of behaviour you'd like to encourage for different parts of the day. You might start off with more of a mellow soundtrack for the daytime, and then ramp it up for the evening to encourage dancing. If you'd like more of a drunken fuzzy kind of night, then you should incorporate more club-type songs, while sing-alongs might be encouraged by classics from your teenage years. If you'd like everyone on the dancefloor, then you can't go wrong with classics such as Wonderwall, Sex On Fire, and most good tunes from Bruno Mars, Marron 5, Kaiser Chiefs and One Republic...

2. Are You Creating A Strong Theme?

You might want to match your music to your 'theme'. For example, String Quartets and Pianists are perfect coupled with a more formal setting, while a Motown/Swing band might better suit something a little more vintage. If you're theming your tables around your favourite records, it might be fun to incorporate various tracks from these into your Wedding Breakfast section. If you're going for something a bit more colourful, then perhaps jazz or light rock might help liven things up a little.

3. What Makes Your Besties Boogie?

Think about what really gets your friends on the dancefloor on a night out. If you're into a bit of cheese then there's nothing wrong with that. You music should definitely reflect your tastes, but do consider what all of your guests would like (playing the odd tune that appeals to your Grandparents will really be appreciated by them). Most of all, if you don't want an empty dancefloor, then don't go to antui-maistream with your choices - anything to 'out-there' or heavy might make eberybody leave early. While this might be the kind of music you like, there must be some more mainstream options that still get you dancing - save the more 'selective' tracks for your honeymoon!

4. Best Tip for Planning Your Music?

Our best tip on the music front is to set up a joint mobile-music account with your partner (e.g. Spotify, apple Music - something you can both access easily from any device). You can sit down for an evening and add search for songs that you both definitely want on there and can continue to do so in the lead-up to your big day. Make sure you divide the playlists into sections for your big day (e.g. Ceremony Arrival, Key Ceremony Songs, Reception Drinks/Canapés, Wedding Breakfast, Early Evening, Main Evening Music).

We recommend starting your playlist as soon as you've decided on your venue and theming. This allows you plenty of time to make sure you include all the songs you love - there'll be lots that you forget about, but that when you randomly hear them in the car, at work, or even while shopping, you can quickly add them to your playlist.

One key song, outside of the above categories to keep separate, is your First Dance Song! If you don't already have a song that's really special in your relationship (the song that played when you first met, a song from your favourite gig together, something that really reflects your lives together, etc...), then that's okay! Life isn't a movie, and we can't all have a song that seems as though it's specifically written for us! It's perfect if you already have a special song, but it's definitely not a problem if you don't have one either! And so, we move on to...
